April DE Event

St. Louis Porsche Club, A huge thank you for another outstanding DE experience. As usual, the event was very well organized and executed. Instruction was first-class and the support in the registration room couldn't be beat. And thanks for arranging the weather. Not sure how you pulled that off, but we really appreciated the PERFECT temperatures. Thanks for setting the right tone for learning, excitement and fun. We had a great time. WELL DONE! See you in Fall '10. Rick Martin '88 Silver John Deere

Harnesses for DE

Like to better understand the requirements for adding 4-point harnesses to a 911 coupe. The DE form indicates that proper seat cut-outs for shoulder straps are required, but that a 4-point harness install does not require a roll bar. Just wanted to confirm this was the case. I assume some form of routing bar for the shoulder straps is required to maintain the proper angles but that's much easier than a complete roll-bar install. Also, can a 5-point harness be used in 4-point configuration? Thanks for the clarification. Rick '88 911 Carrera Coupe

Looking For More Track Time?

Everyone: If you are looking for more track time this Summer and can't wait for the Fall DE...then check out the SCCA PDX events (I know Tim and Dave already have). Every month...June, July, August...there is a PDX event (or two)listed on the schedule (check out the link below). There is also discussion to hold a TT sometime in the Fall. During the April session... several Vipers, Vettes, etc....plus a F430 Ferrari ran in the student groups...if you have a desire to "mix it up" with some other make/model cars. http://www.stlpdx.com/

Track walk at Gateway?

Is there interest in an instructor-led track walk one morning at GIR in April? I found a track walk at another venue last year to be insightful and very helpful. It provided a whole new way to view some aspects of the track once I got out later in the day for some hot laps. I am looking forward to an awesome event next month!

SCCA License School

Everyone: It is that time of year again...racing season...and back to the track. Even though I hold an active national competition racing license...I am going to get my pre-season "tune-up" by taking a 2-Day SCCA course at Spring Mountain...outside of Las Vegas. We all need some "continuing education." I have raced at Spring Mountain before and can tell you that the instructors, staff, track and facilities are all first rate. This SCCA License course is scheduled for 19-20 May using both race prep Lotus Elise and Exige cars. Spring Mountain also offers this SCCA school throughout the year using Radicals and Corvettes...in addition to the Lotus. If you have ever thought about earning a SCCA Regional Competition License...then you should consider this course... since it is only 2 days vs. 3 or more and considerably less expensive at $2,895 than any other SCCA accredited school. I will post the Spring Mountain and Lotus registration links below. BTW...Ron Fellows (well known road racer and factory Corvette team member) assumed control over the school last summer. Hope to see some of you out there in May... http://www.springmountainmotorsports.com/ http://www.lotuscars.com/DrivingSchoolCalendar.aspx http://www.springmountainmotorsports.com/scca-licensing-school/

SCCA PDX 10-19

Just wanted to let all you P-car guys and gals know how much fun I had hanging out with you yesterday at the track. I had a blast instructing two students in a Nissan 350Z and a Lancer EVO. I also had a great ride with Mr. Krumm in his car. (Darn it Tim use that track out in the infield!) Lots of fun and a great day.

Boxsters & the broomstick rule

Hi, I have an '07 stock Boxster that I've DE'd a few times this year, and have definitely gotten the DE-virus! As a novice, I want to understand how my car fits with the rollover protection requirements if/when I were to move into the more advanced groups. I was in 3/C my last two events. Don't want to be presumptuous, but am thinking ahead to when group 2/C might be on the horizon, and don't want to find myself DQ'd unexpectedly. Here's the text from the STL-PCA DE form that pertains to rollover protection (some irrelevant passages deleted): Car Requirement Based on PCA national standards. Open Cars - Any make of standard production car delivered with factory-installed roll over protection meets the minimum standards for PCA DE events. In these cars the soft-top must be in the up position or the hard top installed. However, advanced drivers of open top cars (groups 2,1, and instructor) must have a roll bar that can actually be demonstrated to comply with the "broomstick" rule even if the car is equipped with factory-installed roll over protection. If a car does not have factory installed roll over protection, a roll bar must be installed, which meets the "broomstick" rule (the driver's helmeted head is below a bar placed on top of the rollbar and windshield). ... The windshield alone is not considered to be factory roll over protection. This leaves me with a few questions 1. Does the stock Boxster, with the factory standard "rollover safety bars", satisfy the rollover protection requirement for running in the "advanced" groups (1/2) as it sits, assuming the broomstick test is passed? 2. The text seems to indicate that an infinitesimal amount of clearance on the broomstick rule is sufficient, though elsewhere I've heard that up to 2" of clearance (between helmet and broomstick) is required. Can someone clarify? Is the amount of clearance a chapter- or club-optional item? 3. If I don't meet the broomstick test, but the factory roll hoops in the Boxster meet the "structural" requirement, can I try to achieve compliance with a lower, aftermarket or GT3 seat, assuming it puts me under the broomstick? 4. Is seat-swapping for several track events each year (this is my DD) a realistic alternative? 5. If I install lower "track" seats, will I have to install harnesses as well, or can I continue to use the factory 3-point belts? So many questions ...so little time! Ken
